The Yankees are sticking with Aaron Boone, picking up the manager’s option for the 2025 season, but it sounds like there will be a tweak or two to his coaching staff this offseason.
Boone expects at least one change to be made to his staff this winter.
“We’ll have one for sure,” Boone said in a Zoom call with reporters on Monday. “We’ll see. I would say largely intact is my expectation but there could be one or two that end up changing.”
News of which coach would be departing this winter broke a few hours later.
Assistant pitching coach Desi Druschel took a job with the Mets, per Andy Martino of SNY. He’ll join Mets manager (and former Yankees bench coach) Carlos Mendoza in Queens.
It’s still possible that more moves within Boone’s coaching staff are on the horizon.
When Boone’s comment hit social media, Yankees fans swarmed into the comments, speculating — and in many cases wishing — that the team will hire a new third-base coach for 2025 and beyond.
Luis Rojas has held that role for each of the last three seasons. The ex-Mets manager was under fire again in October for sending Giancarlo Stanton home in Game 3 of the World Series against the Dodgers, a costly decision as the lumbering slugger was thrown out by left fielder Teoscar Hernández.
The Yankees made 18 outs at home plate during the regular season this year, the sixth-highest mark of any team.
Multiple changes were made to the Yankees’ coaching staff last winter. Hitting coach James Rowson, as well as assistant Pat Roessler, were brought in while Brad Ausmus was hired to be Boone’s bench coach.
While it didn’t impact the big-league staff, there already has been one change to the Yankees’ hitting department this offseason.
Joe Migliaccio, who was the Yankees’ hitting coordinator, was hired to be the Marlins’ new director of hitting. Christina De Nicola of MLB.com was first to report Migliaccio’s move late last month, adding that he will oversee all levels in Miami, including the Majors.
